The casts of Gamat

HOME-grown musical Gamat is set to unfurl its message of environmental protection and life’s interconnectedness at Istana Budaya, Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, from Oct 4-12.
Gamat is produced by CTRA Production with the support of the Malaysian Women Writers Association (PPWM), Istana Budaya, the National Arts and Culture Department, the National Arts, Culture and Heritage Academy (Aswara), the Health Ministry and De Media Event Entertainment. Its patron is Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin. Gamat is produced by Siti Rohayah Attan and written and directed by Zaifri Husin. Hafiz Askiak is the composer while Eliza Mustafa and Mohamad Desa Rahman are the choreographers.
The musical stars Zuhairi Ibrahim, Safura Yaacob, Muhammad Aidil Solehin Marhalim, Anith Lim, Syukor Ibrahim, Juhara Ayub and Ellyna Ali, among its 82 actors. Set in the undersea world, Gamat tells the story of three close friends, Flower Crab, Rock Crab and Starfish, who get lost while exploring the seabed. They meet Gamat who has gone to explore the Plankton Garden without informing his parents. Meanwhile, Octopus is sick as a result of water pollution in his home, the Coral of Doom. He commands his sidekick Jellyfish to find a cure for his illness. Jellyfish tries to kidnap Gamat’s mother, but ends up kidnapping Gamat instead. With the help of Porcupine Fish and Eel, Gamat’s mother sets off to rescue her child from Octopus. Along the way, she discovers the horrors of sea pollution, and how it has made many sea creatures gravely ill. Zaifri, from Muar, is a theatre graduate from Middlesex University in Britain. He is best known for starring in the plays Rubiah, Lantai T. Pinkie, Tiang Seri Tegak Berlima, Tun Mamat, Puteri Gunung Ledang and Megat Terawis. He has also directed the plays Bawang Putih Bawang Merah, Sarah and Mana Setangginya.
He has starred in the television series Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu and Cam Ni Cam Tu.
Hafiz is a lecturer in Universiti Teknologi Mara’s Theatre Department and has been involved in the musicals Ali Baba and Puteri Gunung Ledang. Popular 1980s recording artiste Safura is no stranger to theatre and has won critical acclaim for her roles in the plays Ronggeng Rokiah, Bukan Deja Vu and Lantai T. Pinkie, as well as the film Tentang Bulan. Anith was a Top 12 finalist in the third season of reality talent show One In A Million early this year. Time: 8.30pm with extra 3pm shows on Oct 4 and 11. No shows on Oct 9 and 10. Tickets: RM20 (3pm shows), RM30, RM50, RM80, RM100 and RM150. Call 03-4026-5558 or 03-6186-6592.
